Risk assessment for occupational dermal exposure to chemicals

Objective

Skin diseases due to contact with chemicals form the largest group of occupational diseases, not even including diseases by uptake of chemicals through skin. However, little information is available on dermal exposure to chemicals. The proposal aims to reduce acute and chronic ill-health by developing a validated predictive dermal exposure model and a practical dermal exposure risk management toolkit for use in workplaces. To achieve this, a programme comprising four interrelated work parts, is proposed: qualitative survey of processes, tasks, populations and determinants of dermal exposure throughout Europe; quantitative assessment of potential dermal exposure for selected tasks; development of a predictive dermal exposure model; its validity will be determined with biological monitoring; development of a practical risk management toolkit for workplaces, to enable employers to rank dermal exposure risks and choose control measures.

Fields of science (EuroSciVoc)
