Environmental and host factors in the risk of thyroid cancer

Objective

The proposal is for the conduct of additional, complementary work to fully exploit the results of a large case-control study of thyroid cancer in young people, carried-out in Belarus and Russia after the Chernobyl accident. Because of the rarity of this disease in young people, this study provides a unique source of information on its aetiology. Two work packages are proposed:
- WP1: Collection and critical analysis of information on past and current iodine deficiency and supplementation in the study areas
- WP2: Detailed analyses of data on the roles of iodine deficiency and supplementation, history of thyroid disease, reproductive and dietary factors and genetic predisposition, and on their interactions, on the risk of thyroid cancer.
