Objective
It is well known that UV radiation has adverse effects on human health, including immunosuppression. The majority of studies performed involve protocols where laboratory animals or humans are subjected to a single or a limited number of UV doses from artificial sources over a short time period. In real life, exposure generally comprises longer periods of time to solar UV, with shorter times of peak exposures. The consequences of this type of irradiation for immune responses are not known. In addition, adaptation may take place. The consequences of such exposures will form the main aim of this proposal. Experiments will be carried out in humans and in mice, and will include assays of innate and acquired immune responses and genetic polymorphisms. The results can be used to formulate advice for the general population concerning UV exposure and its health impact.

Topic(s)
Calls for proposals are divided into topics. A topic defines a specific subject or area for which applicants can submit proposals. The description of a topic comprises its specific scope and the expected impact of the funded project.

Funding Scheme
Funding scheme (or “Type of Action”) inside a programme with common features. It specifies: the scope of what is funded; the reimbursement rate; specific evaluation criteria to qualify for funding; and the use of simplified forms of costs like lump sums.
