1,3-propanediol - a versatile bulk chemical from renewable resources by novel biocatalysts and process strategies

Objective

Recent development in the use of 1,3-propane idol (PD) as a monomer for novel polyesters and biodegradable plastics leads to a strong market need for an economical and sustainable production of this emerging bulk chemical, favourably by a biological route. Microorganisms from glycerol can naturally only produce PD. The present production volume and price of glycerol is prohibitive for the biological route to compete with the chemical rout. The objective of this proposal is thus to extend the substrate spectrum of microbial PD to cheaper and more abundant renewable resources (glucose, starch and sucrose). This will be achieved by designing new biological pathways and biocatalysts with genetic tools and by developing novel process configurations. The process will be demonstrated on an industrial scale. It will open new ways for a flexible utilisation of renewable resources for non-food value-added products.

Topic(s)

Calls for proposals are divided into topics. A topic defines a specific subject or area for which applicants can submit proposals. The description of a topic comprises its specific scope and the expected impact of the funded project.

Call for proposal

Procedure for inviting applicants to submit project proposals, with the aim of receiving EU funding.
