Enhancing the efficiency and competitiveness of wood -based panels in construction

Objective

The overall objective of this proposal is to define the optimum balance between (n-3) PUFA and antioxidants in the European diet, in order to ensure maximum benefits from (n-3) PUFA for CHD and immune function, without the risk of oxidative stress. Such oxidative stresses are risk factors for increased CHD and cancer. The hypothesis is that sufficiency of antioxidant intake/status is essential for optimal benefits, and perhaps safe consumption, of increased levels of (n-3) PUFA. Thus, populations of Southern Europe consuming a "Mediterranean Diet" rich in natural antioxidants, should be better placed to safely consume and benefit from (n-3) PUFA than their Northern European Equivalents. A cross-country comparison of the effects of (n-3) PUFA and antioxidant intake (both dietary and supplemental) between these two population groups will provide innovative information to underpin dietary recommendations for reduction of degenerative disease, particularly in Northern European populations.
