Implementing tree models as forest management tools

Objective

In Europe there is a strong movement toward uneven-aged mixed forests management based on the idea that uneven-aged mixed species stands, increase or at least maintain soil fertility, increase biodiversity and improve stand resilience. The shift from even-aged forest management renders existing yield tables increasingly unreliable. One possibility to forecast forest growth in uneven-aged mixed stands is to develop stand growth models that operates at the individual tree level. The purpose of this project is to establish a unique platform of model developers, state agencies and forest companies, to enhance existing models, to support those partners in our consortium who have little experience in tree modelling, and demonstrate the usefulness of tree models as forest management tools according to the nine defined application problems.
