European powdery scab initiative workshop: an interdisciplinary approach to sustainable solutions

Objective

Powdery scab is a widespread and serious disease problem of potato crops throughout Europe. Control of the disease is problematic, and a sustainable strategy for disease management is urgently needed. At the European Association for Potato Research conference in 1999, the possibilities for collaboration between potato pathologists across Europe were discussed. Such collaboration in the form of a workshop would bring together a network of scientists and technicians of multidisciplinary expertise from across Europe. The aim of the workshop would be to co-ordinate ongoing research into the biology and control of the pathogen, and to identify areas of research requiring further input. Areas for discussion would include historical and current perspectives, efficiency of control measures, the importance to the seed trade and international standards. Following the workshop, a comprehensive report of the findings would be produced.
