Objective
Survival strategies play an important role in the rural economies of Central and Eastern European countries. They involve informal market circuits, social networks and a specific use of local natural and agricultural resources. They may constitute up to 60% of regional gross production. There is growing worldwide scientific attention for survival strategies, but their socio-economics and agro-ecological potential remains however hardly understood, especially in CEE countries. The identification and strengthening of these survival strategies may provide however important starting points for the design of viable, economically diversified and environmentally sustainable alternatives for rural and agrarian development. This project proposes to bring together qualified research bodies from The Netherlands, United Kingdom, Greece, Romania, Bulgaria and Hungary. The aim of this Accompanying Measure is to organise a workshop to jointly design a larger action-research proposal for submission to a shared cost programme under thematic priority 5.5 Theme 1 (QOL) of the Fifth Framework Programme.
