Objective
The proposal is to enhance the availability and use of round wood forestry thinning in construction by means of finger jointing and laminating the logs. The aim is to develop a simple system for the jointing of prepared logs to provide structural units of longer length and greatercross-section. The objectives are:
(I) to further available European round pole work
(ii) to widen the types of thinning available for structural use to include European hardwoods
(iii) to develop suitable gluing techniques
(iv) to develop appropriate low-tech machinery
(v) to evaluate end uses in agricultural and industrial structures
(vi) to provide design information consistent with ECS. This project is a priority to the SME proposes and others because of the potential added value of the new products. It will be appropriate to foresters, sawmills and timber end users throughout Europe.
