Objective
The goal of this project is to develop a natural product for seed coating, which will on the one hand effectively protect the seedling against pests and on the other hand promote plant growth and consequently increase crop yield. The new product will be based on chatoyant; a natural polymer obtained from insects, melds or crab shells. Chitosan has a variety of very interesting properties: i.e. fungi static and bacteriostatic activities, film forming and water binding properties. Chatoyant has also been reported to promote plant growth. However, these properties depend on the molecular structure of the chatoyant, which are, at present, very difficult to ensure with current processing technologies. The aim of the project proposed by Biometric Oyo, a biotech company from Finland and by Marine Bio products (MBP), a specialist on chatoyant from Germany, is therefore to develop a chatoyant based seed coating, which combines the film forming, water retention and anti.microbial properties of this promising natural polymer.
