Development of ryegrass allele-specific (grasp) markers for sustainable grassland improvement

Objective

In sustainable agriculture, feed production aims at maximizing forage yield and quality, while eliminating negative impact on environment. Despite of the agricultural significance of perennial forage grasses for livestock production, present plant-breeding methods for grasses are underdeveloped compared to other crops. This project will implement state of the art tools in molecular genetics and exploit ongoing genomic projects to identify genes affecting forage quality and stress tolerance for development of gene-derived, allele-specific molecular markers in Folium, the major fodder grass in Europe. Major results will be trait-specific marker toolkits and bioinorganic tools and databases as well as useful breeding materials that will significantly improve the efficiency of targeted grass breeding. This project assembles an internationally competitive European research platform aiming at production of high quality forage grasses.
