Process development for microbial production of the bulk chemical 1,3-propanediol from glycerol water as a waste effluent

Objective

The aim of BIODIOL is to develop an integrated biotechnical process for the production of the bulk-chemical l,3-propanediol (PD) from glycerol waters by using directly the biological waste from biodiesel plants. To increase PD yield use of wastes from food industries as co-substrate will be investigated. To enable the usage of these cheap impure substrates necessary desalting will be done by electrodialysis. A new, highly product-tolerant strain will be used in immobilised form for enhanced productivity and process stability. To gain high PD concentrations, a (fed) -batch system will be set-up. For process control an online -sensor will be developed to monitor the concentration of the substrates. To prevent bacteria inhibition and facilitate PD-recovery, organic acids as by- products will be removed by electrodialysis. All work will be accompanied by economical rating of the individual steps.

Topic(s)

Calls for proposals are divided into topics. A topic defines a specific subject or area for which applicants can submit proposals. The description of a topic comprises its specific scope and the expected impact of the funded project.

Call for proposal

Procedure for inviting applicants to submit project proposals, with the aim of receiving EU funding.
