Developing a physical and functional map of potato: creating new sources for molecular markers to breed cultivars with multiple resistances and quality traits

Objective

The genetic map of potato contains 10.000 AFLP markers and will be used to generate a partial physical map. Strategically important' genes/functions will be placed on the map and may provide new sources to develop markers for marker assisted breeding, preferably located in the genes controlling the trait. The genes/functions will comprise resistance gene candidates, disease/stress response genes, plant maturity, tuber development, carbohydrate metabolism and dry matter content. Physically mapping a large number of resistance gene candidates will contribute towards the isolation of many of disease resistance genes being targeted by map based cloning now and in the future. In keeping with the theme of unifying all existing genetically mapped traits, a 'trait consensus map' of potato will be generated.
