Objective
Several international conventions have recognised the need for improving forest information systems to support sustainable forest management and international co-operation. The EU regulation on European Forest Information and Communication System (EFICS), the Global Forest Information Service initiative of International Union of Forest Research Organisations (GFIS) form the basis for the AM. By coordinating ongoing activities for developing forest information services and systems and by providing harmonised procedures for data provision, the AM will improve the access of the European citizens to existing information on forests, rural development and forest sector. It will contribute to the 6th Framework Programme in its objective to bring IST applications to the European citizens as part of the development towards an information society and integrating and strengthening the ERA.
