Objective
Our proposal has the goal to improve the cost-efficiency of early diagnosis of dementia and differential diagnosis among the various types of dementia. We will use positron emission topography (pet) with fluerodioxyglucose (FDG) as the current gold standard for assessment of cerebral metabolic impairment, which has proven value for early and differential diagnosis of dementia. Clinical, neuropsychological and laboratory diagnostic measures will be gauged by this standard. In a multimember study, we plan to
(1) set up a comprehensive FDG-PET image data base of normal and different dementia types and make it available to the scientific community,
(2) compare other diagnostic tests that are more widely available and less expensive with the PET findings, and
(3) devise cost-effective diagnostic algorithms for early and differential diagnosis of dementia.
