Visualisation of medical instruments in mri for the treatment of degenerative diseases of the spinal column, vascular system and cancer

Objective

By contrast to other imaging modalities Magnetic Resonance Imaging MRI reveals not only morphological but also physical and chemical characteristics of human tissue as multilane volume images. Fluid collection, inflammation or tumours, temperature changes, biochemical activity, function and blood flow can be exploited without ionising radiation and allergenic contrast media. New open magnet designs improve access to the patient. Thus, degenerative diseases of spine, malignancy as well as arterial occlusion could be treated in MRI in a less invasive manner to reduce hospitalisation time and risks for elderly patients. However, today MRI guided procedures are very cumbersome and time consuming because instruments are difficult to localise and to display. This project will provide an electro-mechanical technology to be integrated in medical devices such as instruments, probes, canola, catheters, etc. for interactive visualisation and local data acquisition to facilitate MR
