Fundus autofluorescence, visual function, and quality of life in patients with age-related macular degeneration

Objective

I know the applicant since July 1 st 1995, when she began an 1 1/2 year-research fellowship at the Department of Ophthalmology, University of Heidelberg. She was subsequently trained in our institution as a resident in Ophthalmology. During her time in Heidelberg she was permanently involved in various, focussing on the pathogenesis and new therapeutic strategies in age-related macular degeneration (ARMD). I am pleased to recommend Dr. Bellmann to you enthusiastically. She is a delightful young lady of very superior intelligence and has an excellent educational and professional background. Her participation in our scientific and clinical behaviour and clinical endevour was outstanding. I would rank her in the top 5% of residents I have seen here at the University of Heidelberg. The training she will receive at the Institute of Ophthalmology / Moorfields Eye Hospital in London, one of the most excellent institutions for scientifically and clinical work in Ophtalmology worldwide, will be of enormous benefit for her future career and her contributions to vision research. In 1992/1993 I had the opportunity to pass a 2-year fellowship at the Institute of Ophtalmology / Moorfields Eye Hospital in London. This formed a major base for all my subsequent work which also resulted in a successful proposal for The establishment of a concerted action program by the German Research Council (Deutsche Forschungsgemeinschaft) on ARMD. This covers clinical and basic research projects over the following 6 years of several cooperating groups throughout Germany. After the applicant's training in London we would very much like her to participate in the concerted action program on ARMD. Please don't hesitate to contact me any time, should any questions arise.
