Objective
We propose to initiate a longitudinal Survey on Health, Ageing and Retirement in Europe (SHARE) as a fundamental resource for science and public policy. The pro-jest brings together scientists from many disciplines, including epidemiology, sociology, statistics, psychology, demography, and economics. Scientists from some countries will be involved in feasibility studies, experiments, and instrument development, culminating in a survey of about 12000 individuals over the age of 50 in 8 EU-countries. The multidisciplinary nature of the data (freely available to the research and public policy community) will provide new insights in the complex interactions between economic, healths; psychological and social factors determining the quality of life of the elderly. These interactions, along with pertinent methodological findings, will be detailed in a series of reports emanating from the project, laying the foundation for a longitudinal SHARE in all EU-countries.
