Sustaining working ability in the nursing profession - investigation of premature departure from work - (NEXT NURSES' EXIT STUDY)

Objective

In most European countries there is a shortage of nursing labour, which will become even more severe in the course of the demographic development. Today' s working conditions do not allow healthy ageing at work for the majority of the nursing staff. The vast majority of nursing staff leaves the nursing profession prior to regular retirement age. Within the framework of cohort studies in 8 European countries, the reasons /circumstances for premature departure from health casework shall be investigated among nursing staff of health care institutions in primary and hospital care. Risk factors and risk groups of premature departure, as well as the subsequent consequences, will be evaluated. So will the factors of relevance for normal ageing. Consequently, the investigation provides the basis for targeted workplace health promotion designed to assure sustainable workability in the nursing profession.
