Triage decision making for the elderly in european intensive care units (ELDICUS)

Objective

Triage decisions for the elderly requiring intensive care units (ICU), trouble patients, families and challenge public authorities. There is an urgent need for more transparency, increased cost-effective access to ICU and a European harmonisation of standards. This project will develop recommendations for public policy by
(1) compilation of empirical data by ICU staff in 7 countries;
(2) analysis of triage decisions in the elderly resulting in a social map of ethical values, in a cost-efficiency analysis and in a statistical analysis of the benefit parameters of triage decisions integrated with public policy;
(3) a valorisation process to finalise the products as European harmonisation of standards. The project will produce a Europe-wide ICU triage scoring system in the elderly. This ambitious project requires collaboration by a consortium of ICU's and specialists in medicine, geriatrics, economics, public health and ethics.
