Technology for ATD

Objective

Technology for ATD was a major RACE systems project. It has been executing pre-competitive R&D on key technologies for low-cost realisation of IBC equipment.
Technology for ATD has been developed with particular use of integrated broadband communications (IBC) equipment. The RATT (asynchronous transfer mode (ATM) technology testbed) is a laboratory sized basic ATM network containing a representative of all main network elements from within the customer premises network and from within the public network. Development of this testbed provides a vehicle for advanced experiments that will lead to a greater understanding of the properties of large ATM systems.

The development work has been complemented by studies into traffic and telecommunications management network issues. Studies on evolution and introduction planning produced scenarios, technoeconomic analysis and planning guidelines for the introduction of ATM networks.

The work has been of great importance in bringing together people from manufacturers, universities and network operators. Developments from within the project will eventually be used in a variety of commercial products. The technology developed forms, in general, part of much larger technology development programmes within the corporations.
Impact

The work has been of great importance in bringing together people from manufacturers, universities and network operators. All of the project partners consider the RACE programme and especially this project, as a very important way to gain and exchange knowledge. Their participation has given them valuable insight into the potential of ATM technology. For many, it would have been difficult and expensive to reach the same level of knowledge as they have today, without being so involved.

Developments from within the project will eventually be used in a variety of commercial products. Moreover the expertise gained throughout the co-operation of the project is an investment for future developments. The technology developed forms in general, part of much larger technology development programmes within the corporations.
