Objetivo Well established desalination techniques are applicable for use as base loads in autonomous power supply of local communities, thus creating Wind Diesel Desalination (WDD) systems. Such WDD systems may also be used as decentralised components in larger power supply systems, acting as a distributed generation system A novel WDD concept for use in connection with wind diesel systems is part of ongoing R&D in Denmark. The concept combines recoverage of the 35% energy in the exhaust heat and excess (dumped) wind power in a design using the SD technique, that is able to follow the fluctuations in power flows in a high penetration no storage wind diesel system. At the same time the concept provides measures to allow the diesels to work at lower loads than normally accepted, thus providing improved fuel savings. A pilot plant rated at 500 kW diesel, 900 kW wind energy and 20 m fresh water per day is presently running in Denmark for demonstration purposes. It is the aim of the project to undertake feasibility studles of selected WDD techniques in Greece (Paros) and in Spain (the Balearic Islands) in continuation of initial experiences gained from WDD research activities which have taken place in Denmark. Test results for different conditions in Europe are expected to form the background for large scale demonstration and implementation activities of WDD in a large number of local communities and remote areas inside and outside the European Union, including Third World countries.
