Objective
THERE ARE CURRENTLY NO PROVEN SELECTION TECHNIQUES, OTHER THAN VISUAL EXAMINATION, TO ASSESS THE STRENGTH OF WOODEN POLES PRIOR TO INSTALLATION. IN-SERVICE INSPECTION TO DETECT ROT AND DECAY IS STILL LARGELY A MATTER OF JUDGMENT BASED AROUND THE USE OF TRADITIONAL INSPECTION METHODS SUCH AS HAMMER SOUNDING (STRIKING THE POLE WITH A HAMMER AND LISTENING TO THE SOUND RESPONSE). STUDIES IN EUROPE AND ELSEWHERE HAVE SHOWN A POTENTIAL SAVING IN MAINTENANCE COSTS OF MANY MILLIONS OF ECU PER YEAR THROUGH THE ADOPTION OF A SYSTEMATIC APPROACH TO SELECTION OF NEW POLES AND MAINTENANCE OF THE EXISTIING STOCK BASED OF NON-DESTRUCTIVE TESTING.
THE OBJECTIVES OF THIS FEASSIBILITY STUDY ARE TO REVIEW CURRENT PRACTICES IN THE POLE SUPPLY AND USER INDUSTRIES. INVESTIGATE HOW ROT AND OTHER DEFECTS DEVELOP, IDENTIFY POTENTIAL NEW METHODS OF TESTING AND PRODUCE A MATHEMATICAL MODEL FOR THE OBJECTIVE ASSESSMENT OF ALTERNATIVE MAINTENANCE STRATEGIES.
