HIGH PURITY SINTER ACTIVE POWDERS AND DENSE SILICON NITRIDE CERAMICS

Objective

A silicon nitride (Si3N4) powder has been developed which produces high hardness, high density, and characteristic fracture toughness, if densified by hot isostatic pressing and using low level 1% to 3% sintering aid. If the sintering aid level was raised to 5%, then over-pressure sintering in the powder bed can achieve near theoretical energy density.
TO ACCELERATE THE SINTERING OF SILICON NITRIDE PARTS, SINTER ADDITIVES MUST BE ADDED BUT THESE LIMIT MECHANICAL STRENGTH AND DECREASE HIGH TEMPERATURE PROPERTIES DUE TO THE FORMATION OF GLASSY PHASES. TO EXCLUDE SUCH NEGATIVE EFFECTS THE SINTERING OF SI3N4 HAS IDEALLY TO BE MADE WITHOUT SINTER AGENTS, IN WHICH CASE SOME OTHER METHOD OF INCREASING THE CHEMICAL REACTIVITY OF SI3N4 HAS TO BE FOUND.

ONE SOLUTION IS TO USE VERY FINE, SUB-MICRON SIZE POWDER PRODUCED BY CHEMICAL DEPOSITION OF ORGANOMETALLIC SILICON COMPOUNDS.

THE OBJECTIVE OF THIS PROJECT IS TO PRODUCE SI3N4 POWDER IN A REPRODUCIBLE MANNER WITH SPECIFIC CHARACTERISTICS BY A NEW ROUTE USING ORGANOMETALLIC SILICON COMPOUNDS IN ORDER TO OBTAIN ULTRA-DENSE SI3N4 CERAMICS WITH MUCH IMPROVED MECHANICAL PROPERTIES AT HIGH TEMPERATURE COMPARED TO CURRENTLY AVAILABLE MATERIAL.
