Objective
Initial images with 20 micron resolution have been obtained. Final tests are underway before shipping the complete system to University of Antwerp RUCA. Additional hardware will be added to improve image resolution below 10 microns.
NMR TECHNIQUES HAVE UP TO THE PRESENT TIME BEEN USED TO EXAMINE CROSS-SECTIONS MUCH GREATER THAN THE MICROSCOPIC SCALE. IT IS THE PURPOSE OF THIS PROJECT TO APPLY THIS TECHNIQUE TO THE STUDY OF CROSS-SECTIONS OF NEAR CELLULAR DIMENSION, GIVING APPLICAIONS IN THE AREAS OF BOTH CHEMICAL AND BIOCHEMICAL PROCESSES. TYPICAL EXAMPLE SUBJECTS OF STUDY INCLUDE CATALYTIC REACTION DYNAMICS INVOLVING FLOWING FLUIDS AND THE SOLIDIFICATION OF EPOXIES.
A PROTOTYPE NMR MICROSCOPE WILL BE DESIGNED AND BUILT, AND SUBSEQUENTLY TESTED TO ESTABLISH ITS POTENTIAL INDUSTRIAL USES. A NUMBER OF INDUSTRIAL FIRMS IN THE FOOD AND CHEMICAL INDUSTRIES WILL BE APPROACHED TO DEMONSTRATE THE MICROSCOPE ON REAL INDUSTRIAL PROBLEMS, SUCH AS THE NON-DESTRUCTIVE EXAMINATION OF FOOD TEXTURE OR THE BIOLOGICAL AND CHEMICAL COMPOSITION OF FOOD STILL INSIDE ITS (NON-METALLIC) PACKAGING.

Funding Scheme
Funding scheme (or “Type of Action”) inside a programme with common features. It specifies: the scope of what is funded; the reimbursement rate; specific evaluation criteria to qualify for funding; and the use of simplified forms of costs like lump sums.
