Spray drying is an important industrial drying process, used where it is necessary to convert a liquid feedstock to a solid product in a single step. Best operating procedures are usually obtained by empirical laboratory and pilot plant experiments. Changes resulting from such procedures are generally incremental. The main objective of the programme has been the development and validation of a computer code to model spray dryers. A successful code will reduce some of the empiricism involved in the technology, and consequently help to reduce the risks involved in introducing more radical changes to operating procedures. The main features of the model were examined andspecial instruments were used to make validating measurements. Comparisons of model predictions and measurements were made for wide ranges of dryers and feedstocks. It is concluded that the model gives good enough agreement to give potential users confidence in its potential as a predictive tool.
