PERFORMANCE AND RELIABILITY EVALUATION OF WELDMENTS IN ELEVATED TEMPERATURE SERVICE

Objective

This project succeeded in developing new capabilities to maximize weldment performance in steels used in pipework for the power generation industry. To identify welding procedures which lead to optimum mechanical properties, studies of weldments in an advanced Grade 91 steel were first done.
THE PROJECT ADDRESSES THE OPTIMISATION OF WELD PROCEDURES TO ACHIEVE RELIABLE LONG-TERM PERFORMANCE AT ELEVATED TEMPERATURES IN AN ADVANCED 9 CR STEEL AND REMANENT LIFE/REPAIR WELD PROBLEMS IN THE CASE OF TWO COMMON HIGH TEMPERATURE LOW ALLOYED FERRITIC STEELS (1 CR I/2 MO 1/2 V, 2 1/4 CR 1 MO).

THE PROJECT OBJECTIVES ARE (1) TO DEVELOP A PROCEDURAL SPECIFICATION TO OPTIMISE LONG-TERM WELDMENT PERFORMANCE BY CONTROL OF KEY MICROSTRUCTURAL FACTORS, (2) TO ESTABLISH AN ADVANCED METHODOLOGY USING OFF-LINE PROBABILISTIC TECHNIQUES TO PREDICT THE REMANENT LIFE OF REPAIRED WELDS, (3) TO OPTIMISE NEW NDE TECHNIQUES FOR PRE-CRACK CREEP DAMAGE ASSESSMENT AND TO (4) VALIDATE THE METHODOLOGIES UNDER LABORATORY CONDITIONS ON A FULL SIZE POWER GENERATION COMPONENT AND ON A "LIVE COMPONENT IN THE PETROCHEMICAL INDUSTRY.

IT IS EXPECTED THAT SAFER AND MORE RELIABLE WELDMENTS IN CHEMICAL AND POWER GENERATION PLANTS, TOGETHER WITH A MORE ACCURATE PREDICTION OF REMANENT LIFE WILL CONTRIBUTE TO IMPORTANT SAVINGS IN THESE SECTORS.

Topic(s)

Calls for proposals are divided into topics. A topic defines a specific subject or area for which applicants can submit proposals. The description of a topic comprises its specific scope and the expected impact of the funded project.
