DEVELOPMENT OF NEW COATINGS FOR SLIDING SURFACES AND OF SUPERFICIAL TREATMENTS ON PISTON RINGS FOR BIG 4-STROKE DIESEL ENGINES UNDER SEVERE TRIBOLOGICAL CONDITIONS

Objective

The plasma sprayed coatings FK004 and FK014 showed similar wear behaviour to the reference coating but reduced crack sensitivity and are now in service on the 58/60 engine.

The chromium dispersion layers such as FK52 showed greatly improved tribological behaviour compared to hard Cr. Test results on the IL24/30 engine were influenced by the limited amount of SiC particles. Additional research is needed to increase the number of hard particles in the coating and carry out further tests.

HVOF-coating of cylinder liners is successful in combination with Cr dispersion coatings on rings and can also be used for ring coatings.

THE ACTUAL TREND, AFTER HAVING INTRODUCED ALL THE POSSIBLE IMPROVEMENTS TO DECREASE CONSUMPTION IN THE ENGINES IN SERVICE IN THE LAST 5 TO 6 YEARS, IS, FOR THE MANUFACTURERS OF BIG 4-STROKE DIESEL ENGINES, TO INCREASE THE COMBUSTION PRESSURE FROM 130 UP TO 180 BARS.
IN ADDITION, ECONOMICAL REASONS SUGGEST FOR THESE ENGINES THE EMPLOYMENT OF LOW QUALITY FUEL OILS. THE USE OF THESE FUEL OILS CAUSE TRIBOLOGICAL PROBLEMS TO THE COMPONENTS OF THE COMBUSTION CHAMBER (ADHESIVE, ABRASIVE AND CORROSIVE WEAR), AND STRUCTURAL PROBLEMS (MECHANICAL RESISTANCE OF THE BASE MATERIALS AND THE COATINGS).

THE PURPOSE OF THIS RESEARCH IS TO DEAL WITH THE TROUBLES ARISING FROM THE RUNNING OF THE PISTON RINGS ON THE CYLINDER LINER. THIS RESEARCH IS EXPECTED TO DEVELOP THE MOST SUITABLE COATINGS IN ORDER TO OBTAIN THE AIMED PURPOSE UTILIZING COATING TECHNIQUES WITH PLASMA SPRAYED, PLASMA REMELTED, CHROMIUM GALVANIC DISPERSION.

PISTON RINGS WILL BE PRESELECTED IN SMALL-SIZE ENGINE TESTS FOLLOWING THOROUGH LABORATORY TESTS. THE MOST PROMISING VARIATIONS WILL BE FURTHER TESTED BY THE LARGE ENGINE MANUFACTURER IN MODERN MEDIUM-SPEED FOUR STROKE DIESEL ENGINES UNDER SIMULATED OPERATING CONDITIONS. FINAL TESTING WILL THEN BE CARRIED OUT IN FIELD TESTS.
