NEW FAMILY OF POLYMERS OBTAINED BY MEANS OF AN ORIGINAL TECHNIQUE FOR LIVING ANIONIC POLYMERISATION OF ACRYLIC MONOMERS, DEVELOPMENT OF PRODUCTION AND APPLICATIONS

Objective

This project succeeded in developing three families of all acrylic, polymeric materials: acrylic thermoplastic elastomers (TPEs), impact modifiers for PS, PMMA and ABS, and hot-melt pressure-sensitive adhesives (HMPSAs). These new materials have better weather, heat distortion and oil resistance then SBS (styrene butadiene styrene) copolymers.
THE MAIN AIM IS THE DEVELOPMENT OF NEW FAMILIES OF POLYMERIC MATERIALS ON A PILOT PLANT SCALE USING THE METHOD OF LIVING ANIONIC POLYMERISATION METHACRYLATES AND ACRYLATES. THE KNOWLEDGE ALREADY GAINED IS TO APPLIED IN THE DIRECT SYNTHESIS OF PRIMARY POLY(ACRYLATES), IN A SOLVENT MEDIUM AND AT TEMPERATURES OF ABOUT - 20 CELSIUS DEGREES.

THE NEW FAMILIES OF POLYMERIC MATERIALS TO BE DEVELOPED ARE THE FOLLOWING:
(I) THERMOPLASTIC MATERIALS
TARGET PROPERTIES:
- ELONGATION AT BREAK: AT LEAST 500 %
- ELASTICITY MODULUS: AT LEAST 3 MPA
- TENSILE STRENGTH: AT LEAST 30 MPA.

TARGET PRODUCTS ARE TO BE FOUND IN THE GROUP OF TERNARY BLOCK POLYMERS OF THE ABA OR ABC TYPE, WHERE A IS POLY(METHYL METHACRYLATE) (PMMA), C IS POLY(STYRENE) (PS) AND B IS POLY(BUTYLACRYLATE) (PBA) OR POLY(METHYHEXYLACRYLATE) (PEHA).

(II) IMPACT MODIFIERS
TARGET PRODUCTS: BINARY BLOCK COPOLYMERS A-B, OR C-B, A, B AND C AS ABOVE.
TARGET PROPERTIES:
- HIGH IMPACT POLYSTYRENE: IMPACT STRENGTH AT LEAST 60 J/M, GLOSS AT LEAST 85 %;
- IMPACT PMMA: IMPACT STRENGTH AT LEAST 45 J/M;
- ABS RESIN: IMPACT STRENGTH AT LEAST 100 J/M.

(III) ADHESIVES AND HOT-MELTS
A-B BLOCK COPOLYMERS ARE TO BE STUDIED, A OR B AS ABOVE.
TARGET PROPERTIES:
DUE TO THE WIDE RANGE OF APPLICATIONS OF THIS CLASS OF MATERIALS EXACT TARGET PROPERTIES WILL BE SPECIFIED BY NIEDERLUCKE.

Topic(s)

Calls for proposals are divided into topics. A topic defines a specific subject or area for which applicants can submit proposals. The description of a topic comprises its specific scope and the expected impact of the funded project.

Funding Scheme

Funding scheme (or “Type of Action”) inside a programme with common features. It specifies: the scope of what is funded; the reimbursement rate; specific evaluation criteria to qualify for funding; and the use of simplified forms of costs like lump sums.
