Objective
This project developed a prototype solid-electrolyte capacitor in which the standard manganese-dioxide electrolyte is replaced by a newly-developed organic conductor. The resultant capacitors provide better performance and stability and cost less to produce than traditional capacitors.
In addition to identifying new organic conductor materials, the project also developed a new organic conductor stabilization process, and a new design of capacitor geometry.
SOLID ELECTROLYTIC CAPACITORS ARE CHARACTERISED BY A HIGH CAPACITANCE TO VOLUME RATIO WHICH MAKES THEM SUITABLE FOR APPLICATION IN MOST ELECTRONIC AND POWER CIRCUITS. THE DEMAND IS VERY HIGH AND MET MAINLY BY ALUMINIUM CAPACITORS BASED ON THIN ALUMINIUM OXIDE IN COMBINATION WITH A CONTACT MEDIUM (ELECTROLYTE).
CURRENTLY USED SOLID SEMICONDUCTING ELECTROLYTES ARE FORMED BY COSTLY AND TIME COMSUMING PROCESSES AND SUCH CAPACITORS ALSO EXHIBIT LARGE LEAKAGE CURRENTS, LIMITED RELIABILITY AND RELATIVELY HIGH POWER LOSSES.
THE MAIN OBJECTIVES OF THIS PROJECT ARE:
I) TO SYNTHESISE NOVEL CONDUCTING POLYMERS WITH PROPERTIES TAILORED TO THE SPECIFIC REQUIREMENTS
II) TO ASSESS THE BEHAVIOUR OF DIELECTRIC-CONDUCTING POLYMER INTERFACES
III) TO FABRICATE AND CHARACTERISE THE PERFORMANCE OF A PROTOTYPE ALUMINIUM ELECTROLYTIC CAPACITOR USING NOVEL ELECTRICALLY CONDUCTING ORGANIC ELECTROLYTES LEADING TO A CONSIDERABLE IMPROVEMENT IN PERFORMANCE AND STABILITY, SAVING IN MANUFACTURING COST AND TIME.
