Objective
Yarns from acrylic fibres have been manufactured using high speed spinning processes to determine correlations between processing performance, yarn properties, fibre properties and fibre variability. This sets the fibre parameters to give optimum spinning performance.
THE MANUFACTURE OF YARNS FROM ACRYLIC STAPLE FIBRES AND TOW HAS BEEN MOVING FROM CONVENTIONAL RING SPINNING TO HIGHER PRODUCTIVITY MODERN SPINNING PROCESSES AND THIS TREND IS EXPECTED TO CONTINUE AT AN INCREASING RATE. THESE HIGH SPEED PROCESSES ARE LESS TOLERANT THAN RING SPINNING OF FIBRE PROPERTIES BEING BOTH DIFFERENT FROM THE OPTIMUM AND BEING VARIABLE. ACRYLIC FIBRES, WITH WELL CHARACTERISED VARIATIONS IN CRIMP, BULK AND SURFACE PROPERTIES, WILL BE PRODUCED AND PROCESSED THROUGH THE ROTOR.
PLATT FRICTION AND MURATA AIR JET SPINNING PROCESSES: CORRELATIONS WILL BE ESTABLISHED BETWEEN PROCESSING PERFORMANCE AND YARN PROPERTIES AND FIBRE PROPERTIES AND THEIR VARIABILITY.
LARGER SCALE TRIALS WILL THEN BE CARRIED OUT TO ESTABLISH, WITH A GREATER DEGREE OF CERTAINTY, THE DEPENDENCE ON CERTAIN IDENTIFIED CRITICAL PROPERTIES. CONCURRENTLY, TECHNIQUES BASED ON IMAGE ANALYSIS USING PARALLEL PROCESSING WILL BE DEVELOPED TO MEASURE ON-LINE THE CRIMP CHARACTER AND SURFACE FINISH LEVEL OF FIBRE TO THE REQUIRED DEGREE OF ACCURACY.

Funding Scheme
Funding scheme (or “Type of Action”) inside a programme with common features. It specifies: the scope of what is funded; the reimbursement rate; specific evaluation criteria to qualify for funding; and the use of simplified forms of costs like lump sums.
