Objective
Considerable advances in the field of glass-ceramics resulted from this project, and a prototype multi-layer capacitor has been made from a newly-developed ceramic composition. Testing of alternative powders, as well as efforts to make it within the project domain still remain.
MULTILAYER CERAMIC CAPACITORS BASED ON BARIUM TITANATE DOMINATE THE LOW VOLTAGE (< 300 V) MARKET FOR HIGH VOLUMETRIC EFFICIENCY DEVICES. THEIR USE IN HIGH VOLTAGE APPLICATIONS (EG. ENERGY STORAGE) IS LIMITED BY THE RELATIVELY POOR ELECTRIC STRENGTH OF HIGH PERMITTIVITY CERAMICS WHEN COMPARED WITH PLASTIC FILMS. ANOTHER FACTOR WHICH LIMITS THEIR USE IS THE DEPENDENCE OF THE PERMITTIVITY ON THE APPLIED ELECTRIC FIELD.
THE ELECTRIC STRENGTH OF THE MATERIAL IS PRIMARILY CONTROLLED BY DEFECTS, EG. PORES AND PROCESSING FAULTS, WHILE THE PERMITTIVITY DEPENDS ON THE COMPOSITION, MICROSTRUCTURE AND DOMAIN CONFIGURATION.
THE OBJECTIVE OF THE PROPOSED RESEARCH IS THE DEVELOPMENT OF FERROELECTRIC MATERIALS OF CONTROLLED MICROSTRUCTURE WHICH WILL OFFER HIGHER ELECTRIC STRENGTH THAN CURRENTLY AVAILABLE CERAMIC MATERIALS COMBINED WITH A DECREASED DEPENDENCE OF PERMITTIVITY UPON ELECTRIC FIELD.
THIS OBJECTIVE WILL BE ACHIEVED BY THE DEVELOPMENT OF TWO DIELECTRIC MATERIALS:
A) AN ULTRA-FINE GRAIN FERROELECTRIC GLASS CERAMIC AT ERA TECHNOLOGYB) A FINE GRAIN FERROELECTRIC CERAMIC MADE OF CHEMICALLY DERIVED BARIUM TITANATE POWDERS HAVING TIGHTLY CONTROLLED MORPHOLOGY AND COMPOSITION AT ISTITUTO GUIDO DONEGANI (IDG)
THESE MATERIALS WILL BE FABRICATED INTO CERAMIC DISCS BY UTC WHERE PROPERTIES WILL BE COMPARED WITH STANDARD COMMERCIAL MATERIALS.
THE MATERIALS WHICH OFFER THE MOST PROMISE FOR HIGH VOLTAGE APPLICATIONS WILL BE SELECTED FROM GLASS-CERAMIC AND CERAMIC STUDIES AND FABRICATED INTO MULTILAYER CAPACITORS. COMPLETE CAPACITOR UNITS WILL BE FABRICATED AND THEIR PERFORMANCE COMPARED WITH THE CURRENTLY AVAILABLE COMMERCIAL ITEMS.
