Objective
In accordance with the objectives outlined at the beginning of this project, a prototype leather scanner has been developed. The scanner automatically detects and digitizes visible defects. It also detects and digitizes the handmade marks showing non-visual faults.
THE OBJECTIVES OF THIS PROJECT COVER THE DEVELOPMENT OF THE INDUSTRIAL PROTOTYPE OF A SYSTEM FOR AUTOMATED FAULT DETECTION AND SHAPE DIGITIZATION WITH A RESOLUTION OF 1 MM OF A WIDE VARIETY OF NATURAL LEATHER MATERIALS AND COATED FABRICS. DIGITAL IMAGE PROCESSING AND AUTOMATED VISUAL INSPECTION TECHNIQUES ARE TO BE APPLIED IN THIS SYSTEM.
THE PROPOSED RESEARCH PROGRAMME INCLUDES:
- A FULL CHARACTERISATION OF FAULTS FOR SELECTED MATERIALS.
- SELECTION, IMPLEMENTATION, TESTING AND EVALUATION OF IMAGE PROCESSING ALGORITHMS DEALING WITH FILTERING, NOISE REDUCTION, GEOMETRIC TRANSFORMATION, EDGE DETECTION, PATTERN RECOGNITION, ETC.
- DEVELOPMENT, IMPLEMENTATION, TESTING AND EVALUATION OF NEW IMAGE PROCESSING ALGORITHMS SPECIFICALLY DESIGNED FOR THIS PURPOSE.
- DESIGN AND IMPLEMENTATION OF A PROTOTYPE TRIAL SYSTEM FOR THE EVALUATION OF ALGORITHMS AND DETERMINATION OF FUNCTIONAL, PHYSICAL, MECHANICAL, HARDWARE AND SOFTWARE REQUIREMENTS FOR THE INDUSTRIAL PROTOTYPE.
- DESIGN AND IMPLEMENTATION OF INDUSTRIAL PROTOTYPE.
