Objective
This research programme succeeded in developing non-destructive ultrasonic and magnetic techniques for quantitative characterization of microstructures and residual stresses in many types of manufactured components. The components range from small, high volume automotive components to large, low volume welded pipes for power plant installations and semi-continuously produced steel strips.
THE DEVELOPMENT OF ULTRASONIC AND MAGNETIC METHODS OF MEASURING MICROSTRUCTURE (HARDNESS, CASE DEPTH, GRAIN SIZE, RETAINED AUSTENITE, TEXTURE) AND RESIDUAL STRESS ON A WIDE VARIETY OF MATERIALS.
CORRELATION OF THESE MEASUREMENTS WITH CONVENTIONAL TECHNIQUES (METALLOGRAPHY, X-RAY AND NEUTRON DIFFRACTION, MECHANICAL TESTING AND HOLE DRILLING).
THE CORRELATION WILL BE CARRIED OUT ON A LARGE VARIETY OF INDUSTRIAL COMPONENTS AND MATERIALS INCLUDING COLD FORMED AND WELDED STEEL PIPES, ANNEALED AND WELDED STEEL PIPES, COLD FORMED INCONEL SHEET, INDUCTION HARDENED AND CASE CARBURISED STEEL COMPONENTS, PRESSED AND SINTERED STEEL COMPONENTS, SQUEEZEFORMED ALUMINIUM COMPONENTS, LASER HARDENED ALUMINIUM COMPONENTS, TITANIUM AND NICKEL BASED SUPERALLOY AEROSPACE COMPONENTS, FORGED STEEL COMPONENTS AND COLD ROLLED STEEL STRIP. THE RESEARCH WILL DEVELOP AND DEMONSTRATE THE USE OF ULTRASONIC AND MAGNETIC MEASUREMENT METHODS AND WILL SHOW TO WHAT EXTENT THEY CAN BE USED TO REPLACE CONVENTIONAL METHODS AND ALLOW ON-LINE MEASUREMENTS OF THESE PARAMETERS.

Funding Scheme
Funding scheme (or “Type of Action”) inside a programme with common features. It specifies: the scope of what is funded; the reimbursement rate; specific evaluation criteria to qualify for funding; and the use of simplified forms of costs like lump sums.
