RELIABILITY, AVAILABILITY AND MAINTAINABILITY OF BRIDGES

Objective

THE OBJECTIVES OF THIS PROJECT IS THE DEVELOPMENT OF A COMPUTERIZED DECISION SUPPORT SYSTEM ON MAINTENANCE MANAGEMENT OF BRIDGES.THE PROGRAMMES WILL CONSIST OF:
A. A RELIABILITY SUBMODEL FOR PREDICTING FUTURE BRIDGE STRUCTURE AND/ORUSABILITY DETERIORATION AND THE LIKELY EFFECTS OF MAINTENANCE INTERVENTIONS,USING LARGE MARKOVIAN SYSTEMS COMBINED WITH UNCERTAINTY.
B. A COST SUBMODEL FOR ASSESSING THE COST OF ALTERNATIVE REMEDY POLICIES FOR DIFFERENT BRIDGE DESIGNS.
C. AN OPTIMIZATION SUBMODEL TO PROVIDE THE BEST SOLUTION ACCORDING TO GIVEN PARAMETERS.

AIMED AT EXISTING BRIDGES AND MAINTENANCE POLICIES,THE PROGRAMME WILL SUPPORT DECISIONS ON NOVEL DESIGNS AND NEW MATERIALS FOR IMPROVING BRIDGE RELIABILITY IN AN OPTIMUM WAY.

This project helped develop a prototype software package, called B-Ray, a decision support tool designed to support bridge maintenance and repair considerations. The system includes a data base and three modules to help calculate: predictions on the condition of a bridge; cost for repair or maintenance; and optimization of the timing of repairs.
ETAN IS DEVELOPING A BRIDGE MODEL DEFINING THE COMPONENTS AND THEIR STATES TO BE INCLUDED IN THE DATABASE PREPARED BY TECNIC,WHICH WILL ALSO INCLUDE COSTS ASSOCIATED WITH EVERY REMEDY POLICY OF EACH COMPONENT.THESE DATA ARE READ FROM THE PREDICTION MODEL PREPARED BY SEPTE.OUTPUTTING A LIST OF COMPONENTS WITH CHANGED STATE AND THE ACTIONS:COSTS FOR THEIR MAINTENANCE.CD/E.BMT IS WORKING ON THE OPTIMIZATION MODEL,WHICH FINALLY PROPOSESTHEMOST COSTEFFECTIVEREPAIRPOLICY FROM THE LIST,GIVEN A NUMBER OF PREFERENCES/CONSTRAINTS INPUT BY THE USER.A FULLY WORKING PROTOTYPE FOR THE BRIDGE DECK WILL BE READY EARLY FEBRUARY 1990.

Fields of science (EuroSciVoc)

CORDIS classifies projects with EuroSciVoc, a multilingual taxonomy of fields of science, through a semi-automatic process based on NLP techniques. See: The European Science Vocabulary.

Topic(s)

Calls for proposals are divided into topics. A topic defines a specific subject or area for which applicants can submit proposals. The description of a topic comprises its specific scope and the expected impact of the funded project.

Call for proposal

Procedure for inviting applicants to submit project proposals, with the aim of receiving EU funding.

Funding Scheme

Funding scheme (or “Type of Action”) inside a programme with common features. It specifies: the scope of what is funded; the reimbursement rate; specific evaluation criteria to qualify for funding; and the use of simplified forms of costs like lump sums.
