Objective
The general objective of ADRIA (Advanced Crash Dummy Research for Injury Assessment in Frontal Test Conditions) is to reduce casualties in the Community among vehicle occupants in the most hazardous accident type: frontal collisions. In 1998, a European regulation forthe protection of car occupants in frontal impacts is expected to become effective. The assessment of the protection offered by a vehicle model is based on biomechanical criteria to be measured on a crash dummy. For this purpose, the most widely used dummy today (Hybrid III) and corresponding biomechanical criteria have been proposed. However, the Hybrid III dummy was developed in the US in the seventies and has a number of important limitations in particular with respect to the injury assessment capabilities for head, face and lower leg injuries.
The project has the following specific objectives:
1. to recommend a design of a biofedelic crash dummy face, enabling facial injury assessment in frontal collisions;
2. to evaluate the current Head Injury Criterion (HIC) in view ofnex computer simulation technologies for the simulation of brain injury mechanisms;
3. to assess the suitability of a new frontal crash dummy developed in the US (AATD) for application under European conditions;
4. to assess the suitability of new lower leg dummy components;
5. to develop recommendations for new injury tolerance levels for European conditions.
The research project developed to meet these objectives involves a review of existing knowledge (including real-world accident databases and biomechanical tests), accident reconstructions using advanced medical diagnosis techniques and new computer simulation technologies, performance of additional biomechanical tests in cases where knowledge is missing, and evaluation of promising tools.

Link with European road safety policy development, link with STAIRS project (accident and injury databases), and link with EEVC research activities. Although the ADRIA project intends to reduce the casualties primarily among vehicle occupants in frontal collisions, occupants in other vehicle crash types and other road users (pedestrians, cyclists, motorcyclists) will also benefit from this research since the general knowledge generated in this project can be applied to other accident conditions.
