Objective
THE COMPARATIVE CHEMISTRY OF WASTE LIGNOCELLULOSIC MATERIALS, PARTICULARLY CROP RESIDUES, WILL BE STUDIED AS POTENTIAL SUBSTRATES FOR MICROBIAL FERMENTATION PROCESSES. MICROBIAL COMMUNITIES DEGRADING LIGNOCELLULOSE WILL BE CHARACTERISED AND THEIR USEFULNESS IN FERMENTERS, PARTICULARLY NOVEL SOLID-SUBSTRATE SYSTEMS, WILL BE EVALUATED. PRIMARY PRODUCTS (ALCOHOL AND METHANE) WOULD BE PRODUCED 'ON-FARM' AND THE UPGRADED WASTE MIGHT BE USED AS ANIMAL FEED. SECONDARY PRODUCTS (POLYSACCHARIDES AS SOIL CONDITIONERS AND PLANT GROWTH REGULATORS) MIGHT BE PRODUCED IN NOVEL COMPOSTING SYSTEMS 'ON-FARM' AND USED DIRECTLY, BUT FOR GREATER CONTROL AND SUBSEQUENT PURIFICATION, THE WOULD BE PRODUCED BY MODERN BIOTECHNOLOGICAL PROCESSES 'OFF-FARM'.
