Objectif
WE HAVE PREVIOUSLY SHOWN THAT THE PRESENCE OF BEET-PROCESSING WASTE IN THE GROWTH MEDIUM OF TALAROMYCES EMERSONII INDUCES THE SYNTHESIS OF A CELLULASE SYSTEM BY THE FUNGUS. THE ENZYME SYSTEM IN TURN AS WE HAVE SHOWN HYDROLYZES THE CELLULOSE CONTENT OF BEET PULP (AND OTHER CELLULOSIES) TO GLUCOSE AND CELLOBIOSE. WE PROPOSE TO INVESTIGATE THE DEVELOPMENT OF A LOW COST TECHNOLOGICAL PROCESS FOR THE ENZYMIC CONVERSION OF THIS CHEAP READILY AVAILABLE "WASTE" TO FERMENTABLE SUBSTANCES FOR THE PROVISION OF ENERGY OR FINE CHEMICALS. TO THIS END WE PROPOSE (I) TO EVALUATE AND SELECT THE MOST SUITABLE CELLULASE SYSTEM FROM AVAILABLE MICROBIAL SOURCES INCLUDING THE FINGUS MENTIONED ABOVE, (II) TO OPTIMIZE CELLULASE PRODUCTION BY THE SELECTED MICROORGANISM, (III) TO DEVELOP AN INEXPENSIVE PROCEDURE FOR THE PRODUCTION OF THE ENZYME SYSTEM, AND (IV) TO DEVELOP A PROCESS FOR THE EFFICIENT CONVERSION OF BEET PULP TO FERMENTABLE SUBSTRATES.
