ALLOYING BY ION IMPLANTATION AND BY ION-BEAM MIXING : SURFACE STUDIES OF IRON-ALLOYS WITH INVAR AND PERMALOY COMPOSITION

Objective

Ion beam mixing will be tested to alloy samples (bilayers and multilayers) of Fe-Ni and Fe-Pt in the composition range of Invar and Permalloy. For comparison also direct ion implantation will be perfomed (Fe in Ni and Pt and Ni and Pt in Fe). The main purpose of the project is to contribute to the better understanding of : a) the correlation between microstructure and magnetic behavior of Invar and Permalloy thin films prepared by various methods, and b) the mechanisms involved in metal/metal ion beam mixing. Magnetic measurements will be correlated with data obtained by a variety of techniques (SEM, TEM, XRD, RBS, AES, XPS, CEMS, DCEMS, and others) to analyse morphology, composition, structure and local magnetic behaviour of the samples.
