Objective
This work will build on achievements at the UK Free Electron Laser (FEL) project by combining Heriot Watt University and ENEA in a programme of work including upgrading the FEL detection and signal processing system ; study spontaneous emission of harmonic
radiation ; confirming a beam alignment with gallium doped
germanium photoconductors and a tunable inSb Infrared detector ; measuring gain at the 3rd harmonic (10 microns) using a stable C02 laser ; measuring gain at the fundamental (far infrared laser) ; attempting oscillation at the third harmonic ; attempting injection gain experiments at 10 to 30 microns treating FEL as a superregenerative amplifier. The last two of these are exceptionally difficult experiments.

Funding Scheme
Funding scheme (or “Type of Action”) inside a programme with common features. It specifies: the scope of what is funded; the reimbursement rate; specific evaluation criteria to qualify for funding; and the use of simplified forms of costs like lump sums.
