Objective Cross sections for charge exchange and ionisation in low and intermediate energy collisions between ions and atoms are required in the study of hot plasmas. Recent experiments have shown the importance of doubly-excited autoionising states in these collisions, particularly for multiply-charged ions. Inclusion of such states, and other important continuum effects, poses formidable theoretical problem. Four European theoretical groups currently active in relevant collision physics propose to pool their efforts to understand these problems.
