ELECTRON AND PHOTON INTERACTIONS WITH ATOMS IONS AND MOLECULES

Objective

Research has been carried out on electron and photon interactions with atoms, ions and molecules. Areas covered included low energy electron and photon collisions with atomic targets, intermediate energy electron collisions with atoms and ions, electron atom collisions in intense electromagnetic fields, multiphoton ionization and electron molecule collisions.

Software packages used internationally to calculate cross sections have been further developed and modified to run on the new generation of parallel computers. New data have been generated, of particular relevance to astrophysics, planetary atmosphere physics and gaseous discharges.
A collaborative programme of research on the theory of electron and photon interactions with atoms, ions and molecules will be carried out by four laboratories in Belfast, Brussels, Paris and Rome. The research will have wide applications in plasma physics, laser physics, atmospheric and interstellar science, isotope separations and radiation chemistry and radiophysics. Support is requested for three years commencing 1 January 1989 to employ four postdoctoral research assistants, for travel and subsistence to enable regular working group meetings to be held and for a European workshop which will be organised in Italy during the period of the research programme.

Fields of science (EuroSciVoc)

CORDIS classifies projects with EuroSciVoc, a multilingual taxonomy of fields of science, through a semi-automatic process based on NLP techniques. See: The European Science Vocabulary.

Programme(s)

Multi-annual funding programmes that define the EU’s priorities for research and innovation.

Topic(s)

Calls for proposals are divided into topics. A topic defines a specific subject or area for which applicants can submit proposals. The description of a topic comprises its specific scope and the expected impact of the funded project.

Funding Scheme

Funding scheme (or “Type of Action”) inside a programme with common features. It specifies: the scope of what is funded; the reimbursement rate; specific evaluation criteria to qualify for funding; and the use of simplified forms of costs like lump sums.
