Objective
The molecular mechanism of muscle contraction will be investigated using mechanical, biochemical and structural techniques. Very fast transient mechanical events will be explored to gain further information about the cross-bridge cycle, using refined methods to produce and record rappid length changes. A unified approach will be adopted in the collaborating laboratories. Structural information will be obtained by combining the mechanical methods with X-ray diffraction and optical techniques, including birefringence, polarised
fluorescence and the use of caged-ATP and other compounds
