Objective
Using beams from the Darmstadt SIS/ESR device, it is possible, due to their high instantaneous power focussed onto a small target, to produce a near solid state density plasma and to measure the stopping power of such a plasma for heavy ions, the knowledge of which is crucial for Inertial Fusion evaluation. The experiment needs the construction of a dipole analyser associated with a fast position sensitive detector for heavy ion energy loss measurements. As far as plasma diagnostic is concerned, a VUV (or X) spectrometer will be built. Data interpretation requires a powerful theoretical support.
