ORDERING KINETICS IN ALLOYS

Objectif

During this project, the following topics were examined:
the mechanical disordering of intermetallic phases (especially but not exclusively nickel aluminide (Ni3Al));
the reordering of the disordered material so made and associated changes in properties together with special attention to kinetics;
mechanically induced amorphingation and its relation to prior disordering;
other phase transformations induced by milling (with respect to zirconium aluminide (Zr3Al));
ferromagnetic property changes associated with changes in degree of order.
Substantial discoveries have been made in all these areas.
The objective of the project is to examine the ordering kinetics of a range of initially disordered alloys, at several temperatures, and to relate the observed kinetics to the strength of ordering in each alloy as well as to other characteristics, especially diffusivities. A further objective is to collaborate with experts in computer simulation to relate observed ordering kinetics to theoretical predictions. The experiments are to be done with several alloys with high critical temperatures, notably the (Fe, Ni, Co)3V family. The experimental techniques to be used include differential scanning calorimetry, x-ray and neutron diffraction and electrical resistivity.
