Physical and chemical interactions between oxide ceramics and metals can be affected by the oxygen activity of their gaseous environment. The influence of oxygen activity on the joining of oxide ceramics by liquid metals (brazing) and by solid metals (diffusion bonding) will be investigated. The influence of oxygen on the solid-liquid interfacial energy and on the work of adhesion of liquid metals on oxides will be studied. The influence of the non-stoichiometry of the oxide on wettability will be analysed. Dynamic wetting behaviour will be studied and the mechanical properties of brazed and diffusion bonded joints will be evaluated.
