The use of centrigugal modelling and numerical analysis to investigate further develop the "butthonole method" of limiting surcharge - induced lateral earth pressure on piles

Objective

Embankments constructed adjacent to foundations, which are piled through soft alluvial deposits to a competent substratum, cause lateral deformation of the soft soil and hence, lateral thrust on the piles. These passive earth pressures occur when soil moves further than, or past, the piles. They induce pile bending moments and displacements, additional to those arising from structural loads, which may critically affect the serviceability of the piled structure.

Novel foundation techniques, such as buttonholed piles have been invented in Germany, with the assistance of Wuppertal Universitaet. The length of the pile in the upper soft layer is surrounded by an annulus of material with low shear strength, so that this passive lateral earth pressure may be minimized. This system has been implemented previously at 2 European sites, but without sufficient knowledge of the fundamental soil structure interactions to optimize the design, technically and economically.

Comparisons of existing design rules have been made, alongside a series of centrifuge model tests on the 10 m diameter beam at the Geotechnical Centrifuge Centre. Data was obtained from this technique to evaluate the soil structure interaction, leading to the development of optimal design codes for piles located adjacent to surcharge loads.

Programme(s)

Multi-annual funding programmes that define the EU’s priorities for research and innovation.

Topic(s)

Calls for proposals are divided into topics. A topic defines a specific subject or area for which applicants can submit proposals. The description of a topic comprises its specific scope and the expected impact of the funded project.

Call for proposal

Procedure for inviting applicants to submit project proposals, with the aim of receiving EU funding.

Funding Scheme

Funding scheme (or “Type of Action”) inside a programme with common features. It specifies: the scope of what is funded; the reimbursement rate; specific evaluation criteria to qualify for funding; and the use of simplified forms of costs like lump sums.
