Objective
The proposal initiates between two laboratories a collaborative research project on proton tunneling dynamics in intermolecular hydrogen bonds. Initially, benzoic acid doped with dyes of
systematically varied polarity will be investigated intensively using frequency high-resolution and time-resolving picosecond sectroscopy. The understanding of this model system is expected to lead to a conceptual framework allowing to treat the more complex biological structures. The present study is in particular relevant for the issue of the displacement of tautomeric equilibria in the DNA replication process under the action of mutagens. It is the objective of the collaborative effort to bring to bear the
results of this work in the area of DNA replication by organizing regular joint workshops with the participation of international outside experts.
