Objective
Innovative combined application of laser surface treatment, ion implantation and electrochemical surface treatment will be investigated for the
development of surface engineered noble metal materials with an enhanced electrochemical response to be employed for beneficial effect in prosthetic bioengineering applications (eg, stimulation electrodes, bacteriostatic coatings). Characterisation of surface structure and composition, adsorption
of specific protein types, electrochemical properties for ion implanted Ir or Ti or Ti alloy with a multilayered oxide film developed electrochemically or by laser surface oxidation will allow optimisation of electrochemical response and control of process variables. High real surface aera analogues
produced via laser surface alloying will be investigated. Controlled release of Ag for bacteriostatic effect will be developed. The aim is to provide a
firm scientific basis for further major European initiatives in this area;
this will significantly improve the potential of European industry to compete in the large international market in biomaterials. Central to the surface engineering approach to be adopted will be the innovative combined use of laser surface treatment and ion implantation techniques for the
enhancement of materials properties.

Funding Scheme
Funding scheme (or “Type of Action”) inside a programme with common features. It specifies: the scope of what is funded; the reimbursement rate; specific evaluation criteria to qualify for funding; and the use of simplified forms of costs like lump sums.
