Objective
Resolution has been achieved for an open problem in vortex dynamics posed by Hassan Aref by the discovery of a new mechanism for chaotic scattering of 2 point vortex pairs with circulation +/-1.
A new algorithm in molecular dynamics has been developed for the detection of collisions in a dilute gas (continued fraction method, allowing an improvement of up to 1e6 in the computation time compared with previous algorithms).
The theory of the relaxation of a gas of point vortex pairs has been improved, including comparison between numerical simulations and self similar analytic solutions.
A new technique has been developed for calculating Stokes flows in a triply connected domain and compared with experimental results.
Stable localized solutions have been discovered in plane Poiseuille flow.
Numerical calculations have been made of Stokes flow in a doubly connected stadium domain.
